David's mind is fractured, memories clouded over of how things came to be. He doesn't understand why his body reacts slower than it used to or why the hunger he feels consumes him to the point of madness.
There is another with whom he communicates called Simon. He's un-reliable and mysterious, popping up and disappearing, seemingly knowing what's on David's mind before he's even spoken the words. David doesn't trust him, but he's the only one who seems to know more about this new world.
There are others like him, wandering, in search of food, ready to scrap for any piece of flesh. David sees the "others" too. The ones he calls "demons," who kill his kind for sport.
After watching his son get mowed over, David rallies the other flesh-eaters to hunt down the foul creatures who so easily take their lives.

Kate is David's twin, one of the demons. She's always had a second sense when it comes to him and she knows he's not dead. Well, at least not dead-for-the-last-time dead. Out on an excursion she spots him and doesn't have the nerve to take him out. Her inability to kill him leads to a serious battle against these flesh-eating creatures.

Ahhh. A refreshingly original tale of a world torn asunder by the Blacktide virus. It's humans against the undead in this solidly told story. Kinda reminded me of one of my favorite movies, Land of The Dead, where one "thinking" zombie leads the other not-so-smart zombies to the tower where there's plenty of food to be had. The zombies don't know that they are really dead, continuing on with what they did before they were infected, with the exception of chewing on each other of course. The best part was viewing the apocalypse from a zombie's perception, as if they are the humans, the ones who are being hunted unfairly.
The characters all had their places to shine, never a weak one about. They carried the story with ease and I was able to finish this in one day. It's really un-put-down-able. I don't dole out my 5 Stars too often so this really was an exceptional treat and I highly recommend you give it a try.
