Nightlife

Nightlife - Matthew Quinn Martin Poetical overview~

A hunter stalks the things that go bump in the night.
They took away the things he cherished in life,
but didn't take away his will to fight.
There's a new kind of monster on the streets tonight,
they can possess your mind and cause you fright.
They are who you want them to be,
playing tricks with your sight.
They sap your will, move in to kill,
unless you're in light.
There's a different spin, you can win,
cuz salt does burn and maim.
This is a fight that Jack must win
before they multi-ply again.

Jack, a hunter who has been slaying monsters alone not making any new friends, runs into an unlikely ally in the streets.
Beth's friend has gone missing and she's been tracking down leads which have led her right to Jack. She thinks Jack knows what's going on and she won't walk away without an answer.
Jack eventually has to fill her in on the monsters that some people call vampires who have killed her friends and she accepts this easier than he would have thought. These aren't the normal vampires people read about.
There's a nest of these creatures and with Beth's help Jack thinks he might just be able to stop them before it's too late.

Jack was not a likeable character. He was stiff and he irritated me with his constant dictating. There was not a moment when he wasn't telling someone "silence" "be silent" "you will tell no one" and so on. He just expected whatever he said to be taken at face value and obeyed. This is not endearing.

Beth was a little whippersnapper and she just flowed along with the story, helping out, saving lives, and her spunk kept me reading. She was tough when needed and she was pretty much up for anything. She's a gem.

This story read like it was made for teens and when I looked at it from that aspect the story was more fitting. As an adult read, I would have to say it was too simple and repetitive. The reader wasn't given enough information at the appropriate times. The reader had to wait right along with Beth to get the answers needed and Jack wasn't very forthcoming.

The author has potential, I would like to see him grow and flesh his characters out more.
